Retail Therapy
July 10th, 2007 at 10:28am McB
We all have coping mechanisms we turn to in times of stress, right? I know reading is at the top of the list for this group when it comes to getting through tough times. I also know that hanging out here at the Bar&Grill is some of the best medicine around. CherryBombs totally rock, that’s all there is to it.
I have a few other things that I turn to, as well. Gardening, when the weather cooperates, and I’ll have to take some new pics soon to share with you guys. And my crocheting, which has stepped up considerably. I finished and sent off my last project and I’ll get around to posting pictures on my blog one of these day. I also started another for the couple next door who are expecting a baby very soon. It’s a WIP, but maybe I’ll show you what I’ve got so far.
I have to admit though to giving into a little retail therapy as well. More specifically,
SHOES!!!!!
I have small, hard to fit feet so I often end up ordering shoes from catalogs. It’s not a bad deal if you know your brands. The best place I’ve found to order from though, is Zappos. What I like about them is the product reviews. Real people discussing the fit and comfort and what they like or dislike about the product overall. They also have free shipping, which is a plus. If you want to know more about what kind of company they are, read Zaza’s blog.
Last week I decided to indulge my need for retail therapy so I went shopping at Zappos. And I ordered these:
Aren’t they gorgeous? They came yesterday and it was love at first sight. Plus they’re pretty comfortable and will go with just about anything. I was so giddy, my mom half expected me to wear them to bed. No, I didn’t. With those heels? Please, they’d ruin my sheets.
But here’s my problem. While browsing last week I also spotted these:
which you’ll have to agree are just too darned cute for words. And they have them in other colors, such as
which would be perfect with jeans, don’t you think? I’m debating. And you may recall that last summer on the dueling blog I talked about buying these
which it turns out they still have in stock. Really comfortable, although as they are suede I can only wear them during nice weather. It’s a burden, but what can I do? Plus they have them in black suede
which makes me drool a bit, but I have a pair something like those already, though not in suede. And I might be better served to get theses
instead anyway. Why yes, they do come in other colors, thank you for asking. Decisions, decisions. What would you do?

What’s to decide? It’s obvious.
Buy them all, of course.
McB, you’re worth it.
2. me | July 10th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I love the first ones you picked out, and I might even wear them to bed. And I agree, the third pair would look great with jeans. And you could wear them longer than the white shoes, if you follow the rule about white shoes.
I’ve never ordered shoes from online/catalogs. I have to try them on because I have a hard time finding ones that fit. I have big feet. Size 10. And they’re kinda wide. Those fashionista designer skinny pointy-toed shoes never fit me (plus they look ridiculous on my gigantic feet). But these shoes? They might work.

I’m not normal.
Yesterday at lunch with a couple of Canadians and few folks from Indiana I had realized the even though I “dressed” for the occassion, meaning I didn’t show up in my sweatpants, inappropriate shirt and my hair in a ponytail, i forgot to put my shoes on. Meaning, I wore my foot thongs instead of my nice Tommy Hillfinger high healed open toe shoes I wear all the time.
My shoe life consists of Hockey Rink Shoes (rocket dogs and they are god awful ugly but damn warm), my EveryDay Shoes, which are these black open back high heals that go with anything shoes, but these are for winter, so I have a pair of open toe, open back (the tommy hillfinger ones) that i wear in warmer weather and of course two variety of high healed boots for winter. that is about it folks. Well, I own about 10 pairs of 99Cent foot thongs from Target, but seriously, that is about it.
I hate shopping. Shopping would put me in therapy.
I’m so not normal

Ah, differences! I’d never in a million years wear any of your choices. Why? I get cold easily and want my footies covered. I have a narrow heel; so many shoes don’t fit and stay on. I prefer loafer-type shoes - comfortable, and can kick them off quickly; stay on my feet when in motion. No heels - too many years with pointy-toe high heels. Footies hurt too easily. All my shoes look basically alike - black, blue, brown loafers. Dullsville.
But those strappy things are cute.
5. McB | July 10th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
GP - the two suede pair are pretty cozy and stay on very nicely. They have goring on the sides to keep the fit tight. And they are Rockports so really well made shoes as well as comfortable.
Jen-T - see I can’t wear flip flogs because the between the toes part drives me crazy.
Me - the reviews on Zappos is great if you are hard to fit. Other people describe the fit and comfort and weather they fit true to size and stuff like that. Very handy for on line ordering.
Mary - don’t tempt me.
6. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
ahhhh, you obviously know how darn happy I was to click over here and see words and shoes! Even though it is raining, I have a new facial tick from the boys fighting, and tomorrow is my anniversary and I have nothing for my GAM, my shoulders came down a notch, and I was able to take a deep breath… all because of shoes and words!
I think I may have to get those camel suede shoes! I love a good wedge. nooo, not wedgie, I don’t like those at all.
BCB - I e-mailed you.
Jen - you are so gorgeous, I’m fairly certain no one was looking at your shoes. And now I expect a big ole post including pics. Not for saying you are gorgeous, that is just a fact, but because we need to know how much fun was had.
7. Diane | July 10th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
I love the shoes you bought, and also really like pair #3. I bought a pair of white openwork high-heeled thongs that are surprisingly comfortable (the “upper” looks like white lace, though it’s not fabric, and has a little bow), but I don’t necessarily expect them to last super long, and will not, of course, wear them after Labor Day, since I don’t live in Florida, where I understand that rule doesn’t apply.
I, too, have a hard-to-fit foot: wide at the front and narrow at the heel. I mostly do OK in regular size 6, but I absolutely have to try things on, because there is so much variation. And I have a pair of clunky Claiborne loafers that mostly fit, but sometimes if I sit for a long time (car, airplane), my feet swell just enough that it is painful, if not impossible, to get my feet back in them. Oh, and I have a high-ish arch - not truly aristocratic or anything, but enough to make most boots also “painful if not impossible”.
Jen-T - look out for the flip flogs! I was reading about the sudden dramatic increase in serious foot problems in young women since they became the default footwear. Try to get something with a little support! And have a wonderful time at Thrillerfest - I’ve been reading and listening to Lee Child books on y’all’s recommendation, and have really enjoyed them.
8. Jen-t | July 10th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
McB - you know, there are other types of sandle/flip flogs that don’t have that middle thing. Just saying.
Andi - thank you. Very nice of you to say that.
Um Diane - I’m no spring chicken and I spent my youth barefoot. My parents had a horrible time keeping me shoes and I was the kid that would get out of the car at the resturant, but didn’t have any shoes with me. Can’t tell you how many times I drove the kids to school this winter with nothing on my feet. I’v e got thick ankles. Really I do. Add them to my size 10 wide foot and my very large calves, yeah, all the support I need.
9. McB | July 10th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Jen, yes I have a pair of Bass that criss cross the instep. I just don’t find them comfortable if I’m doing a lot of walking. For that I prefer at least a little heel.
Andi - and they have them in dark red suede too *wiggles eyebrows* But even I can’t justify buying them.
10. cary | July 10th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Sorry, Andi, another spot where we diverge - shoes. Practicality wins over cute factor. I just can’t bring myself to spend that much… (Purses on the other hand…. I finally figured it doesn’t take that long to switch purses if you KISS.)
Like Jen, my shoes are referred to in terms of function - one each brown and black, low- and high-heeled work shoes, couple pairs of weekend shoes, and a pair of sneakers. Although I did step out of my comfort zone a few months back to buy a pair of strappy sandals, which are getting a workout in this heat….
11. cary | July 10th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Although, if I felt more in the mood to splurge, I’d seriously go for that tan sandle…
And like ME, I can’t get into shopping for shoes by catalog. My feet are too difficult (and nearly two different sizes). And I can’t bring myself to trust someone else’s opinion on comfort. (Heck, have you read Amazon reviews on books? Point made.)
I can only do catalog clothes if I’ve tried it on in store before. I do most of my (clothes) shopping at one boutique, for reasons of size. But they are always selling out of pants in my size. So if it fits in the store, but in a color I don’t like, I will order it from their website. (Although I really begrudge the shipping costs. When did websites replace customer service? “I could order that in your size and call you when we get it in…”)
And of course, that only works for pants. Too many variables for their tops - trying to guess just how low that v-neck will go on me, etc.
12. orangehands | July 10th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
i’m with JJ; shopping is a very draining, horrible experience…unless it’s books or mystical stuff. i can play around in those kind of stores for hours. (food’s ok too)
gotta go give blood, which means i’m going to be bouncy for an hour (i get very, very energetic after i give blood).
have fun deciding MCB (go with the second and fifth pair)
13. dee | July 10th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Sorry - OT - I made it to Dallas. I m at the hotel with RSS. I’ll be blogging it as often as I can drag myself away from the bar.
You guys blew me away, and your advice and encouragement was just exactly what I needed.
Thank you.
I’ll send up the Moot Signal if we need anything.
14. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
Cary, Cary, Cary, When I get out west to see you, there are some things we will work on… my aversion to girly smelly things, and your shoe practicality. And, of course, your lapsed love of baseball, that we will do at the sports bar over a nice cold adult beverage. Practical shoes, really?
Now, I do love, love, love shoes but, I wear Target flip-flops everyday. From the tacky shower style, to what I optimistically call the dressy silver faux leather. Everyday. Except in winter, then it is Frye boots all day, everyday.
McB - I have a pair of red Ugg clogs that wear even with stuff that doesn’t even think about matching them. That fleece is soooo comfy.
OH - remember to pound the OJ and stay laying down for a little while.
dee - you go have some super fun, you deserve it!!!
15. Lori | July 10th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
McB: I honestly think you’ve already purchased the best of that bunch. Enjoy!
I’m so excited for you Dee. Have fun with RSS! Oh, and enjoy Nationals too.
Ah, shoes. I love shoes, but I haven’t bought any in about 5 months now. I do love my new job, but it is really messing with my shoe selection. All my favorites have been banned from the library for one reason or another. I’m almost ashamed to say how many times a week I end up wearing my Converse All Stars with dress pants and a button down shirt. Or a nice shirt, dressy capris, and cheap Old Navy flip flogs. I really need to look into finding some dressier flats that I love the look of, but I can run around in for 9 hours and still be able to walk back to my apartment at the end of the day. I’m beginning to doubt the existence of such a shoe.
Jen-T: I have a pair of Rocket Dogs I got on clearance at DSW. They definitely have their own look, but I love ‘em. Mine kinda look like this: http://www.solestruck.com/rocket-dog-krash-ivory-flower-polkadot-cotton/index.html
16. cary | July 10th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
Geez Andi, and I didn’t even mention my ever-so-practical, don-them-when-I-get-home Nick & Nora lounging pants (with big red strawberries), black t-shirt, and sheepskin-lined suede slippers. The perfect ensemble for escorting young pups to the backyard for their duty time. Or obtaining drive-thru ice cream cones.
17. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
as long as there are NO mom jeans (button above the belly button), 80’s style aerobics Reeboks, and hair scrunchy, the after work ensemble works. But if you have a pair of SAS shoes, and I know you are not a nurse, I’m going to have to get out there STAT!
18. McB | July 10th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Cary, Zappos sells purses too. Everything from dainty little clutches to saddlebag wannabees. And some of them are really funky. Check them out.
For lounging I have a pair of orchid suede, fleece lined, “Old Friends.” These are the most comfortable slippers I’ve ever owned, but sturdy enough to walk down to the mailbox in.
Jen, have fun at ThrillFest. Report back on the cup.
Hey Dee!! Glad to hear you both arrived safely. Check your phone.
Alright everyone. The Bombs Away, Not at Nats, I Pity Anyone Who Can’t Be At the B&G Now Party will officially get underway tomorrow. We did manage to rescue the juke box after the hotel fire and it’s been refurbished. Sadly, though, the green shag rug did not make it. Sorry Scope.
19. Christina | July 10th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
I am a practical shoe buyer as well. I only have about six or seven pairs of shoes which includes my shower flip flops, regular flip flops and my pretty-much-everyday-walking shoes (I love me my Sketchers). I do a lot of walking everyday here, so if the shoe is not comfortable, it’s not worn–period. For some reason, I think (though I have yet to confirm this) that my new work boots have somehow bruised half my big toe on my right foot. I don’t remember dropping anything on my foot so I don’t know how else to explain it. hmmm…
20. Lou | July 10th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
Christina - they may be creasing at the wrong place. You know, that line that develops over your toes because you walk heel to toe? Sometimes, for reasons known only to…(?) they “break” (crease) in the wrong place and press on your big toe. You can’t always feel this when it happens, but when you take the shoes [boots] off at night, your toe is bruised. Don’t have a remedy for said problem, but have had it happen with a pair of boots before.
Dee - have fun, let us know how everything’s going, take pictures, etc.
Shoes - the only ones I have are practical **sigh**. Because of serious ankle injuries, I can’t wear high heels anymore ***SIGH***. Those choices are sure cute, McB. I love them… {{monster sigh}}.
21. McB | July 10th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
I think Lou is right. Christina, see if you can stick something solid down into the toe of the boot. Then use a hammer on the area to try to soften the leather up. Or maybe, being work boots, they are tough enough not to need the solid undersurface.
My love of shoes stems from having such darned small feet. For years I had to make do with the most practical of shoes because stores never had my size. But when you order online, a much much wider range of sizes becomes available. Big, small, narrow, wide - and a better range of colors too. I don’t splurge too often, but once in a while the new found freedom goes to my head.
22. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 7:42 pm
I think McB’s post knows how much I hate to shop, especially for shoes, and it wouldn’t let me in to comment until now. How traumatic. I almost cried. I hate shoes — shopping, wearing, you name it. Purses are a close second. But McB, if you love them so much I think you should buy all of them. WTH, it’s only money, right?
Andi: If you sent me an email, I didn’t get it. Norton and Yahoo have been taking turns holding my email hostage lately. Every time I think they’ve declared a truce and let some of it cross the fog shrouded bridge at gunpoint, I discover “new” mail that is a week old. I am not amused. Maybe you could try again? Do you have the right email address? boncheribomb AT gmail DOT com
Dee, glad to hear you and RSS got there safely. Don’t worry about posting from there, you can tell us about it when you get home. Just have fun. Jen, you’ll have to keep us posted on your mishaps at ThrillerFest. Why do I say “mishaps,” you ask? I can’t imagine. [evil grin] You have fun, too. Maybe next year we can go together.
Ok, I’m starting to fee a bit claustrophobic in the presence of all this shoe shopping talk. Plus I’m exhausted from work. So I’m going to go relax with a little light reading for a while and then go to bed early.
Well, that’s the plan anyway.
23. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 8:27 pm
Geez, this blog is difficult tonight. I’ve tried six times now to get back in here to the comments. The screen keeps going blank. Grrrr.
Anyway, regarding email. All my gmail goes into my regular email inbox so I never actually go over to the Google page to look at it. But for some reason I decided to go over there just now and I found out I have a SPAM folder. I did not know this. Some interesting things in that SPAM folder, let me tell you. But there were also several emails from a bunch of you guys. So I checked their little boxes and then clicked the button that said “not spam” and figured they’d go to my inbox and I could read them there. Well, now they’re missing in action. I don’t know where they went. Probably they have to pass through initiation rituals with Norton and Yahoo — though what business Yahoo has messing with Google email is beyond me. I just know it will happen. Yes, it’s a conspiracy.
Anyway, I remember there were emails from Lori and Mary and a couple more from whom I don’t remember, one might have been Dee, and two telling me that the last two emails I sent to GP came back as undeliverable. But none from Andi.
I am really not amused at this point. So if any of you sent me an email and I did not reply to it, and if it was something I should have replied to, I probably didn’t get it. Or I might get it in a day or a week or next December. At which point you will be very confused because I will reply to it then. Unless you want to re-send it. It’s a risky proposition. I’m sorry.
And I thought Mercury was done being retrograde. I think instead it exploded all over my computer.
Grrrr. This has not been a very good day.
24. Mary | July 10th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
I just figured you didn’t like me. Didn’t bother me a bit. Offended? Nope, not me.
… surreptitiously sneaks off to remove all those pins from the BCB voodoo/doodoo doll…
25. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
Wah!
26. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
BCB - I just resent.
27. Mary | July 10th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Andi, does that mean you’re resentful?
28. WapakGram | July 10th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Ok- (she takes deep breath) my name is WapakGram and I am a shoe whore. I have a special place in my closet built just for shoes. I have summer shoes in now, and the winter ones under my bed in their nice roller plastic box.
I could never find shoes to fit-really high arches and size 10 wide- until Nordstrom came within my driving distance. It is all their fault. I discovered Merrels for support and ballet slippers with glass fake jewels.
No really high heels, I’d fall over. But oodles of shoes.
In fact I bought a green suede pair with leopard around the whole outside with kitten heels….just for the Dallas I don’t party.
So get the smoke out of the juke box. You can’t see- what? Oh yes, I have extra lamps- here use mine. I’m ready to p-a-r-t-y.
29. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 8:55 pm
only about the regular stuff, you know, my sister was always my dad’s favorite, her legs are longer and thinner than mine, she has straight hair, my grandma loved my brother more, his car is faster, his bank account bigger… whatever.
30. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Andi, nothing has come through yet. Not in any of the various boxes. Not even in the SPAM box. I looked.
Probably Mary didn’t remove ALL those pins.
31. andi | July 10th, 2007 at 9:12 pm
OK, BCB - I’m a dork. I re-sent the draft to you after noticing I put in the wrong the e-mail address. But now you should have the completed note, not the fragment I saved after a huge thunder. Now you should have 2 almost identical notes from moi!
32. McB | July 10th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
voodoo doodoo dolls? I just hope she washed her hands.
33. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 9:16 pm
YAY! One of them came through just now. We just won’t hold our breath about the second one. Or the third.
I’ll be replying in just a few minutes, once the shock wears off. Let me know if the return trip is similarly fraught with mayhem. [can you tell I’m tired and a bit punchy right now?]
34. GatorPerson | July 10th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Just sent BCB a non-junk email. Let’s see if that works. Norton has a Spam box. It decides if something is spamish. You can go and click that it not spam. Then it moves the email back to the inbox.
I HATE TO SHOP. I have spiffo Hush Puppy “The Body Shoes.” Hush Puppy discontinued the style at least 5 years ago, and all of mine are falling apart. I doubt if any are less than 8 years old. Like I said, I hate to shop.
LL Bean and I are developing a love affair. I’ve found some pants that fit and long-sleeved tshirts. The company is so tradition that I doubt any of this will ever go out of style. Brown, navy, and khaki color. Mix and match. Go hog wild with a peach-colored shirt. I claim we’d all be happier as cats. They don’t have to wear clothes. Or shop.
35. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
GP, thanks. Just emailed you back.
And this is just ridiculous that I have to tell people on the blog that I sent them an email. The internet hates me. I’m going to bed.
36. BCB | July 10th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
I might be happier as a cat. No email.
Well, not that I know of, anyway.
37. Louisa | July 10th, 2007 at 9:47 pm
First–Hotel Fire? Green shag?
McB
I think you are showing off to post so many photos.
Definitely the brown ones with the nailheads around the sole and beads across the vamp. Those are the best.
Someone else, and I can’t say where because I’m everywhere and also have a memory like a pasta strainer, was praising Zappos. The story was very touching. I’d have to say this was probably a CB on her blog. I had never heard of Zappos before. Harpo, Groucho, Chico, Zeppo, and Gummo (ugh), yes, but not Zappos.
Like Jen-T, I hate to shop. Oh, I’ve been over to 43 Folders lately, but they’re serious over there.
Like GP, I love loafers. Never put the pennies in them any more, but what’s not to love about one less thing to tie, zip, whatever?
Cary–Purses! Yes! Satchels, briefbags, hobos. Yeah. A place to put portable stuff. Sigh.
Dee–you be careful in Dallas. The heat index here today was 107. I really can’t imagine who decided it would be a good idea to have a conference here in July. November, maybe. Yeah, November is good here. Late March, for about four days. Otherwise, the weather will get you.
I love my SAS shoes. Made in America. How’s that?
I was so happy to finally be able to get here. All day my browser was choking on this site. Okay. I can sleep now.
38. Penny-scope dope cherrybomb | July 10th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
Mcb you should buy all those shoes shown then ten pair of the last ones. It would be really nice if you bought one for me size 8.5 wide. Just kidding but I really do love the last pair. I love shoes too. The GAM (mine) has decreed that I should no longer wear heels since I fall over in my flip flogs but I love my heels.
JenT had to point out to us that she was wearing her foot thongs yesterday because we were so busy talking with her we didn’t notice. We had a very nice lunch. It was good to see her. Bcb it seems you and I have something in common as far as Jen is concerned. She said I was sounding just like you when I told her to stop saying “for only five days” when she said she was published. Thrillerfest did come up. She said she was nervous but she is also excited about going. I told her if Suzanne Brockman was there to say Hello from me. She won’t know who I am but it would make me feel good.
Jen looked great so don’t let her kid you.
Our company from Indiana left today I am sorry to say. We had a wonderful time with them although CMS got to spend the most time with them since they were really her company. Cathy is a very sweet woman and I like her very much. Bryan was great but he spoiled CMS’s dog so much that he (Bryan) is in the dog house with me.
KY loved him because Bryan kept petting him constantly. Bryan also made a to-die-for Chili that he might make for the Not Nationals Party if you ask nicely. He’ll be home in time. Cathy’s daughter Katy is a lovely 14yo who has a real talent with drawing. She left me a great picture which I have framed and will be putting on my wall.
I am thinking of supplying pork hocks and saurkraut for the party. I am originally from Kitchener, Ontario which is where I learned to eat this German delicacy. Of course if you don’t like that I make a great Chicken Pot Pie with Parmesan Twist biscuits on top. I could bring that instead. Let me know.
Mcb I am devastated about the green shag rug. Did my Perry Como records survive…and the record player? How about Barry Manilow? For entertainment I can bring my almost worn out DVD of “Charlotte’s Web”. I watch that quite frequently.
Louis I am thrilled that you found the popcorn machine. Did the Pole survive? CMS and Lori will want to know.
39. Penny-scope dope cherrybomb | July 10th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
OOPS. I didn’t mean did Barry Manilow survive but did his records survive. Last I heard he was very well.
40. Mary | July 10th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Barry Manilow? We don’t need no stinkin’ Barry Manilow… um, that was supposed to be a paraphrase of a movie quote, Scopie… just kidding…
But seriously, who needs records? This is our chance to set up the stage in a corner of the bar and put on the first ever concert of the Chipper Spam Monkeys, the skunk-rock* band that consists entirely of backup singers! (And one roadie.)
*skunk-rock, a new form of music where it doesn’t matter how badly you stink.
41. cbpen | July 11th, 2007 at 12:18 am
I like to shop in bookstores and office supply places. I have always had a hard time finding shoes. I have a narrow, long foot with an even narrower heel. I walk out of loafers all the time. Then, a few years ago, I was being chased by thugs who were after the secret recipe for Chocolate Caramel Cacophony when I fell off a cliff…fifty feet onto a ledge and cracked my ankle bone. Pain and agony. Okay, would you believe, I was delivering said Cacophony to a writer’s get together and slipped sideways onto a decorative rock. Same cracked ankle, same pain and agony? Anyway, now I have an even harder time with shoes. I have four pair.
I will bring the Cacophony to the party, if I can bring a couple of bodyguards to keep the recipe stealing thugs away.
42. cbpen | July 11th, 2007 at 12:21 am
Hey, I can be a roadie too. I have actual experience at that…way back in my checkered past…after my biker chick phase.
43. Louis | July 11th, 2007 at 12:39 am
Louisa…
Re: Hotel fire etc
That happened at the last virtual party and is best left in the realm of lost memories.
The poles ….I thought they were already installed and ready for action.
44. cbpen | July 11th, 2007 at 1:04 am
Another thought, (I know, I’m getting out of hand here) speaking of the juke box (and someone did), we need John Mellencamp “Cherry Bomb”. :> “Say hey, hey, hey….”
Also, how about one for the Chipper Spam Monkeys…it would work with all back up singers, I think. Cherry Bomb, Cherry Bomb. Don’t cha just love it? Cherry Bomb, Cherry Bomb, don’t YOU just love it? Cherry Bomb, Cherry Bomb, don’t cha just love it? Cherry Bomb, Cherry Bomb Bomb Bomb. (Tune of Chicka Boom)
Whadda ya think?

Louisa - during last year’s RWA National conference, those of us who didn’t go decided to throw our own party. We rented out a really swank suite at a really swank hotel. But a few days in, the moles (that’s another story entirely) decided to have a weenie roast (or was it marshmallows?) on Scope’s green shag rug.
46. BCB | July 11th, 2007 at 8:03 am
Ah yes, I do seem to remember coming back from Atlanta only to find you all blaming it on the moles.
I have a song for our party, but it will have to wait until after work. Gotta run.
Hey, Theresa, have a great time digging in the Italian dirt! Check in with us when you get back, OK?
47. BCB | July 11th, 2007 at 8:05 am
Argh. I meant to say Christina. But Theresa, if you want to go dig in the dirt in Italy, I’m sure Christina would be happy to have the help. I’ve heard it isn’t raining there much lately.
48. GatorPerson | July 11th, 2007 at 8:47 am
Just saying, no email from BCB yesterday or this morning. Maybe try your other email account.
49. Mary | July 11th, 2007 at 9:01 am
Hey, anybody need any pins? They’re useful for all /kinds/ of things…
50. andi | July 11th, 2007 at 9:14 am
I’m off for a day of romance and fun with my GAM to celebrate 15 years of joyful togetherness. Not one spent in jail! Sure, the asylum down the road, oh, that’s my house, but none in jail!
Drinks are on me…. start with the Mimosa, then Bloody Marys, a coupla Coronas for lunch and Ritas all the way around!
51. CC | July 11th, 2007 at 9:53 am
Andi- congrats!!!!!
52. Marcia in OK | July 11th, 2007 at 10:21 am
andi -Happy Anniversary.
dee/RSS - thinking of you and hoping your as having a great time at Nats.
Jen-T - Thrillerfest will be great for you. Can’t wait to hear your stories about the events.
Shoes - LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I think I can beat Wapak - I have 4 overdoor shoe holders (one pair each slot) and 2 shelves in the closet, and the flip flops and tennies in a basket. I have a size 7 1/2 medium foot, can wear most brands, and when I find a style I like, I’ve been known to buy them in multiple colors.
Purses - Love to look at them, shop forever to find one I like, and only change 2x’s per year. Almost always carry a black one. I hate that whole changing stuff out deal. I suck at it.
Just noticed that today I’m wearing 99 cent flip flogs from Target. (They do have a stylish flower on the strap. I wear the dratted between the toes traditional style.)
I’[m taking Friday off, so tomorrow is my last day of work this week. YEAH!
I”m taking my 2 DDs and my 2 nieces to Branson for a long weekend. Me and 4 girls ages 6-13. This should be interesting. (I did plan us one afternoon of shopping. I bet I can find some shoes!)
Good day all
53. CC | July 11th, 2007 at 10:37 am
Marcia- I love branson- what shows are you going to? are you taking a dinner cruise on one of the riverboats? Going to Silver Dollar City?
54. Lori | July 11th, 2007 at 10:43 am
Congrats and have fun today Andi (and her GAM)!
Marcia: Have a wonderful time in Branson!
BCB: No worries about the email of mine that disappeared. Not sure what my email was about, but it probably wasn’t important. I kinda find it strange that people that you correspond with on a pretty regular basis (an therefore would be automatically on your gmail contacts list) would be thrown to spam, but whatever. As for where they went after you clicked “Not Spam,” did you check your “All Mail” option? You may have set your filter to make them skip your inbox. Then again, you may have set the filter to delete them too. If that’s the case, they’re probably long gone. Right, so good luck with your email troubles.
As far as the Chipper Spam Monkeys go…mind if I give the drums a try? Never played before, but they look fun. I really like the flame decal on the snare, and the neon purple triangle hanging there looks intriguing. I’ll be sure to use that a lot.
55. Christina | July 11th, 2007 at 10:52 am
BCB–I take the mix-up as a great compliment.
I am off tomorrow, but I am set to hand over my laptop into the hands of a trusted friend in just half an hour. Hope you all enjoy the non-nats party. I will check in again in a month.
Later gators.
56. CMS | July 11th, 2007 at 10:53 am
McB - I love the second pair. I’ve ruined three pairs of shoes in the last month. For some reason, I’m putting my weight down strangely on the one foot and it’s destroying my shoes. Being on my feet for 12 hours a day working two jobs might have something to do with being off-balance. My Traitor Dog (more about that in the post to follow later today) has one leg longer than the other right now. The muscles in the other leg are “guarding” so we’re going to start water therapy tomorrow. Just as we were about to head off today the heavens opened up. I know he was going to get wet anyway but I was looking for an excuse. Watching the dog who used to love me most search the house for his new favourite person was depressing
I’m off to work but will post pictures from the CB visit (it was too long to call it a meet) later today.
I hope everyone enjoys their day. I’ll play the kazoo in the Chipper Spam Monkeys. Or the cow bell. Doesn’t all the best rock anthems have a cow bell? I’ll play the cowbell. Yup. Clank clank clank clank Gong
57. cary | July 11th, 2007 at 11:17 am
CMS - Sorry about the traitor dog. If it helps, Fred mopes every time my Mother leaves. (He’s the only one…..)
Try TTouch for Ky’s leg - I’ve seen it work wonders on aging German Shepards. If you aren’t familiar with it, put “TTouch” in your browser’s search box. Look for Linda Tellington-Jones.
58. cary | July 11th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Anyone else getting just slightly frustrated with the “site due in June” tag on the AATH site? I mean, I know Mollie’s busy, what with having to rescue Bob from himself and all, but ……
Da**it, I WANT AGNES!!!!
59. Theresa | July 11th, 2007 at 11:37 am
Italy. Sure, why not. Digging in the dirt….well, when I was I kid, I used to build forts with my next door neighbor friend in the dirt pile in his yard. But I have a feeling my digging skills are long gone.
*waving* By Christina, have fun! I’ll have a few drinks at the what ever we’re calling it party on your behalf.
Shoes. I really do need some new sandals. My Clarks that lasted for four years are finally beat. And this week we’re finally having some sandal-worthy weather. With the exception of shoes for dress occasions, if I can’t walk comfortably in the them to and from work, they’re not worth it.
Is there room for a French horn in the Chipper Spam Monkeys?
Andi - Happy Anniversary to you and your DH!
60. Lou | July 11th, 2007 at 11:55 am
andi - have a great time with your GAM. Happy anniversary!
Christina - try the hammer trick on your boot, and if all else fails — I break in new cowboy boots by putting them on, standing in a puddle of water until they are saturated, then wear them until they are dry. Do not take them off until they are dry, and you have to walk and/or work in them. The water softens the leather so that it moulds to your foot as it dries while you move around. Then, put a good leather conditioner (saddle soap or neatsfoot oil) on the boots (really rub a lot in) and wait overnight. They should fit you just fine after that.
Linda Tellington-Jones is a wonder. She treats horses as well as other animals and her methods work.
CMS - You are putting your weight down funny on that one foot because your back is out. You, like your dog, probably have one leg shorter than the other. Your back doesn’t need to hurt to be out. Go to a chiropractor (find a good one) or a physical therapist.
61. dee | July 11th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Haven’t read the comments yet, but will get to that later tonight. Maybe.
We’re having a BLAST, but nothing has been blown up yet. Yet.
I’ve been sneaking back to the room to post things, mainly so I don’t forget them. Everyone is just so freakin nice! As usual, BCB was totally right about that. And no, I haven’t yacked a single time. Thanks for the e-mails and even the text message, guys. You’re keeping me going.
Now, I need a favor. You have a few days to figure out if you can comply, bu I’ll need an answer by Saturday morning at the latest. Here’s the deal:
The Golden Heart and RITA Awards will be announced at an event on Saturday night. Since I obviously can’t sneak the laptop in there, I am planning n sneaking in my phone, and sending out a text message to someone as each winner is announced. I can text your phone or your e-mail. The thing is, you have to be near this blog, so you can post the winners as they happen. Anyone want to volunteer? If so, zap me an e-mail, or comment on my post, and I’ll get your e-mail/text address so we can make this happen.
Ok, off to lunch with RSS now. I’ll try to pop in again later.
And OMB I met Victoria Alexander AND Suzanne Brockman. How cool is that?!?
62. me | July 11th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
CMS: I’ve got a fever and the only prescription is More Cowbell! (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.) I want to play the tambourine.
Andi: have a great time! happy anniversary!
Cary: the site’s been updated, now it says “due in July”.
Looking forward to the party. I need a stiff drink. Still no A/C because they didn’t believe me when I told them what was wrong, me being just a girl and all, and so it took them an hour to pull it apart to tell me that i was right and they were wrong so they have to come back again with the right parts this time. ARGH.
63. Mary | July 11th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
But Me, Cary… does it say WHICH July?
64. Mary | July 11th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
I can relate to the lack of A/C. Bummer.
I’m actually looking forward to going in to work for once.
65. McB | July 11th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Andi and Marcia - have a good time with your respective date.
Dee - I’m not sure if I’ll be available Saturday night … it would depend on when the awards are and what the time difference is. But you could do it anyway and I’ll put it up as soon as I get home. Unless you get a better offer.
Okay, let’s get this party underway. Would the members of the Chipper Spam Monkeys back up singers and jug band please assemble on the raised dias at the back of the room?
The rest of you, bring your edible offerings over here to the long table.
Aaannnndddd we’re off!
66. CMS | July 11th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
I’m still reeling from the Top Shelf Margaritas that Bryan, Scope and I hoisted in Mc’s honour on Monday. Funny thing is Bryan and I were both saying that while it’s not high on our list of favourite beverages we always have one when meeting other CBs so that McB is present - in spirit. Ba dum bump.
I have to clang the cow bell softly. I’m at work. But singing to Bohemian Rhapsody that’s playing on the Irish radio station I’m listening to over the Internet. In the library, that only has one other person besides myself in it.
Sending a cold Canadian wind Me’s way. damn girl they need to fix that for you. It’s been ridiculously hot the last few days.
67. me | July 11th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Oh, McB, that sounds fabulous. I’ll take two. Please.
And here’s my contribution, Praline Pecan ice cream. Hurry and get some before I eat it all myself or it melts, whichever come first, but you can bet I won’t let it melt. Mmmm…
CMS: turn up the radio, because i can’t hear for whom the cow bell tolls.
Sorry, I’m in a mood today. Must be the ‘ritas.
68. GatorPerson | July 11th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
That thar Top Shelf Margarita? Does it gots to have them thar worms in it to be expensive?
Do margarita hangovers hurt as much as bourbon and coke? Red wine? If I were to try a margarita at a restaurant, what would I say to make sure I don’t get the wormy tequila without appearing as a redneck doofus?
Inquiring minds, etc. The worms are actually larvae. Larvae have the purpose in life of converting food to massive amounts of fat. For most larvae, their taste on the human tongue is simply a fatty sensation. BUT I STILL AIN’T DRINKING NO TEQUILA WITH WORMS BOBBING AROUND IN IT!
Shall I bring handbells to go along with the French horn? Recorder? Tympani? Comb, saw, and washboard?

Waving my fan steadily here for all you guys without A/C. I’ve got plenty here at work. My office is right next to the computer server room - which is currently without A/C. So all thermostats are set at 60, and the fans are blowing. I swear it is gonna start snowing in the hallway anytime now.)
Sorry dee - I’m no help. I’m away from my computer for several days starting tomorrow.
CC - we are going to the Dixie Stampede instead of doing the riverboat cruise this time. We are also doing 2 days at Silver Dollar City, and planning on getting in some outlet mall shopping. (At SDC we are seeing the circus on ice, outdoor amphitheatre stage show, and of course the Saloon show.) I’m so looking forward to the weekend.
I’ll send you guys some funnel cakes, kettle corn, fresh fudge, salt-water taffy, and BBQ for the virtual party. I’ll reserve the right to surprise ya’ll with anything else I walk by that looks good.
Good food can make a good getaway - Great!
Drinks all around.
70. Louisa | July 11th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
I hope this party is taking place in Virtual Lake Louise or maybe Oslo.
Could the Monkeys use a rhythm Zither player? I’ll stand in the back.
71. dee | July 11th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
If you want to know anything about The Man, check out the comments on my latest post over on my blog. I swear, he keeps me smiling, all the way from Virginia.
I need some ‘down-time’. My head is raging. There are so many people here it isn’t even funny. Nice people, loud people, laughing people, people that I’ve dreamed of meeting for years. WOW! That’s about all I can manage. I’m taking out my contacts and slipping into bed for a bit with the new (not even out yet) Patricia Gaffney novel, MAD DASH, that I picked up for free this morning.
‘ritas later. I promise.
I wish you were all here with me!!
72. McB | July 11th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
From StraightDope.com (not to be confused with Scope Dope):
There’s no worm in tequila, or at least there isn’t supposed to be. Purists (hah!) say the worm belongs only in a related product, mescal. Strictly speaking, mescal is a generic term meaning any distillate of the many species of agave (or maguey) plant, tequila included. ….
…. The critter in question is the agave worm, which is actually a butterfly larva. The worms bore into the agave plant’s pineapplelike heart, and quite a few get cooked up in the brew used to make mescal.
73. cary | July 11th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Marcia, move over - I’m coming to work with you. Ours is struggling. I think the load yesterday (102 degrees) fried it. It comes on, but the room gets warmer and warmer between hits.
Pass over the fudge and BBQ, too, please. (Oops, you don’t have that yet…)
74. btuda | July 11th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
We’re having an absolutely gorgeous day here. The heat broke so the temps are staying in the 70s. Yay! It took an act of god to get me back inside after lunch, especially since I kept hearing this little voice beckoning, “…road trip … road trip…”
I’ll contribute brownies and carmel sauce for brownie sundaes for the party. Sausage balls too!
75. CMS | July 11th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Mmmm, I didn’t get to use OH’s bbq sauce like I promised Bryan (we were trying to stick to a CB theme with our meals) so I’ll grill up some chicken skewers for the party. I still have some apple crisp from the other night. Just give me a quick sec to increase the amount for the horde.
Okay, there you go, apple crisp, Toblerone fudge and chicken skewers basted with OH’s bbq sauce. Yummm. I’ll just take a surreptitious sip of margarita while the patrons look the other way. Only four more hours til I can go home. To a quiet quiet house with a depressed dog.
76. CMS | July 11th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Lou - I went and had a massage the other day which helped with my misalignment. We’ve been working on it. The Ky-ropractor does humans as well as animals so if the massages don’t fix the problem I will visit her alone.
I do some hands-on healing with Ky a fair amount and the massage Bryan gave him yesterday did wonders for him as well. He’s a spoiled dog but I do love him, even if his affections have wandered elsewhere. He’ll come back. As Bob says, they always come back.
I moved The Frog Formerly Known as Prince into the aquarium with Grover the betta fish. Until the pond is fixed, and The Frog awaiting Katie’s symbol drawing grows, this is the safest place for him.
I need to go nap or write. Standing besides Alex’s place yesterday was fairly inspirational.

It’s so lovely to be having a party - it almost takes my mind off the fact that the laundry I put out is now wetter than when I hung it up, due to the downpour, which has expanded its repertoire to include thunder and lightning.
Thanks very much for the margarita, it’s lovely, and just right for today’s weather. To prevent the desire for cool beverages from pushing inebriation too far, I’m offering 7-Up/ sorbet floats. And, because this party is virtual, the double-blueberry pie with gingersnap crust.
And gazpacho, for those who want something resembling an actual meal to serve as a base for treats and liquor. The gazpacho actually exists, but will not be arriving in the mail.
81. Diane | July 11th, 2007 at 4:18 pm
Oh, and I’m glad you’re having such a good time, Dee! Otherwise, there would be no point in us having a party to make up for not being there….

Buy them all??? I have trouble finding attractive yet comfortable shoes, too. When I find a pair that’s a keeper, I often buy them in other colors, or just more of the same. I’ve got one pair of black espadrille-style shoes that i have three pairs of. I went back for a second pair, and they were closing them out. For $9.99. Instead of about $70. They had two pair left, and I bought them both. They’re so classic, they’ll still be wearable ten or even twenty years from now. And I’ll have a brand new pair!!! Tiny pleasures for tiny minds. /;+)
Cute shoes come and go, but I like to have some classics I know are there and comfy. ;+)

Geez, you guys had nothing else to do today but talk over here? I am so jealous. I think I’ve finally caught up on this post.
Louisa: Are you in DALLAS?! I don’t remember you telling us that. You should send Dee an email and find a time to meet up with them in the hotel bar. Really. They’d probably even give you a few of their free books. What day is it, Wednesday? They should have three or four dozen by now.
Dee: Why am I talking to her, she won’t read this. I’ll try to send her an email. There is no need to text the winners to anyone. RWA is putting the info up LIVE on their website this year for the first time. So anyone who wants to know can go there and “watch” the results.
www.rwanational.org
I’ll be paying attention because three writers from my chapter are nominated.
Anyone know what the deal is with Cherry Forums? I try to click on the link for it and it says the site has been disabled. Mollie must be upgrading or something.
Thundering here, so I should probably get off the computer. Yep, just checked radar. Lots of red. I’ll be back later.
85. ZaZa | July 11th, 2007 at 6:17 pm
Louisa, that was me praising Zappos. For those of you who didn’t check out my blog post, we had ordered a bunch of shoes from them for my mom because she’d lost so much weight. Only two pairs fit, so we were returning the others (free postage). When i let them know my mom had died and that I’d get the shoes back to them as quickly as I could, they not only arranged for UPS to pick up from me - usually you have to take them to UPS or pay a pickup fee, but they sent me flowers. It still makes me teary thinking about it. You can’t get much better customer service than that.
Dee, you and RSS have fun with the gang. Meet a lot of new folks, pitch books, and keep us posted. Ditto on the heat. I lived in Tucson for a while, and it’s just not the same as a hot day or two in California or Virginia, for that matter. We’ll drink toasts to all the Nat-attending CBs, don’t worry.
Happy Anniversary, Andi. Congratulations. Have a great girls weekend, Marcia!

ZaZa,
Stupid of me not to remember. I feel so bad for you, losing your mom. Mine’s in the other room. Funny that being so very frail has no effect whatsoever on her complete control-freak personality. No better woman ever was, but all the other moms are her equal, I am sure.

Hey BCB #84
From JCF:
Does anyone have any information as to why the Cherries site is
disabled and suspended?
I’m one of the moderators on the Cherry Forums. We’re all as surprised
as everyone else that this happened. Mollie, who is Jenny’s Girl
Friday, is working on it. The company that hosts the server has had a
busy signal on their customer service line, so it appears that something
blew up on their end.
It’s 89 in my home office right now. I was going to stay and admire the CB shoe fashion show (we have a fabulous shoe for you tonight, ladies and germs…) but it’s too darn hot!
